The late Nigerian leader, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 in a London clinic, was flown back aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft. The plane touched down at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina around 2:00 p.m.
The mood at the airport was somber and respectful as a military honor guard stood in formation, saluting as Buhari’s coffin—draped in the national flag—was received by senior government officials, family members, and close allies.
Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal delegation from London, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had already arrived in Katsina. Tinubu joined Governor Dikko Umar Radda to formally receive the late leader’s body.
Also in attendance was First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who joined other dignitaries for what became a poignant national tribute to one of Nigeria’s most influential statesmen.
Following a brief military ceremony, Buhari’s coffin was transferred to a waiting hearse. The funeral convoy then embarked on a quiet road trip to Daura—his hometown and now his final resting place.
Along the route, grieving locals gathered by the roadside. Some stood in solemn silence, others whispered prayers or wept for the man affectionately known as “Mai Gaskiya,” meaning “The Honest One.”
In Daura, preparations for the Islamic burial rites were already underway, with clerics and residents assembled to receive the body. He will be interred in a family gravesite alongside his late father and mother.
From his role as a military Head of State (1983–1985) to serving as a two-term civilian president (2015–2023), Buhari’s legacy in Nigerian politics and national security continues to leave a lasting impact.
