In a statement released on Sunday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, dismissed the reports as entirely unfounded and misleading.

He stated that the reports falsely portrayed normal legislative engagement as signs of internal conflict.

“Our attention has been drawn to various media publications alleging a clash between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during a closed-door session meant to discuss whether or not to proceed with the annual recess,” the statement read.

“These claims are completely untrue and misrepresent the well-established traditions of parliamentary deliberation seen across democracies worldwide, where members from different political backgrounds engage in open debates and questioning before any decision is made.”

Adaramodu emphasized that rigorous debates are fundamental to legislative processes and should not be mistaken for discord.

“As Nigeria’s top legislative body, the Senate functions no differently from other parliaments. Every motion, bill, or proposal is subjected to thorough debate and scrutiny to ensure it aligns with the interests of the over 230 million Nigerians we serve,” he said.

He concluded by clarifying that spirited discussions—whether in plenary or committee meetings—are part of the Senate’s duty and should not be misconstrued as evidence of disunity among its leadership.

“Debating policy matters is part of our job and should not be seen as personal conflict or leadership rift,” he affirmed.
