The bridge, a key infrastructure linking the two states, reportedly gave way overnight, bringing economic and transportation activities along the route to a halt.

Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Works, said the structure collapsed under the weight of a heavy-duty truck.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Press Secretary, Olajide Moyo Abolarin, the government explained that the bridge “collapsed overnight under the weight of a heavy-duty truck.”

The state government immediately announced traffic diversions to alternative routes in order to ease movement in the affected area.

It further stated that traffic management officers had been deployed to regulate vehicular movement and reduce congestion along the diversion routes.

According to the statement, the Kwara State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has begun work on alternative routes to ease traffic flow while repairs are being arranged.

It also directed that state traffic officials should work closely with transport unions and commuters to ensure orderly movement, while palliative measures commence immediately on the old iron bridge.

The government appealed to residents and motorists to remain calm, assuring that efforts are underway to resolve the situation.

“We call for patience and understanding from road users while the emergency is being addressed,” the statement read.

Authorities also assured residents that construction work on a new Moro Bridge, located a few metres from the collapsed structure, is ongoing.

They added that federal authorities are fast-tracking the project to provide a permanent solution to recurring structural challenges in the area.

The Moro Bridge serves as a major link between Kwara State and Oyo North communities, including Igbeti, Igboho, Kisi, Saki, and other towns in the Oke-Ogun axis.
