Tensions Rise As Nigeria Hits Back At Ghana Over Anti-Nigerian Demonstrations

The protests, held by hundreds of Ghanaians, featured placards with inflammatory accusations, including claims that Nigerians were involved in mass prostitution, ritual killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes. Slogans seen in a viral video included: “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”

Reacting to the protest, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, issued a statement on behalf of the Commission’s Chairperson/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa. She described the blanket criminalization of Nigerians living in Ghana as unacceptable and deeply concerning.

“Nigerians are not criminals. They are law-abiding and productive citizens in every part of the world. Those who commit crimes—whether Nigerian or not—should be identified and face the law individually,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Ghana, likening both nations to “Siamese twins” bound by ECOWAS principles and shared regional aspirations. She called for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

She further urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and not to engage in any retaliatory actions, assuring them that the issue is being addressed diplomatically. She also warned against the use of inciteful language by both Nigerians and Ghanaians, as such rhetoric could worsen tensions.

Addressing circulating rumors, she dismissed claims that Nigerian-owned shops and properties had been attacked, stating, “There is no verified evidence of such incidents. We must all work to prevent any form of reprisal.”

Dabiri-Erewa commended both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for their swift efforts in managing the situation. She also acknowledged that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs is actively engaged with Ghanaian authorities and has already taken proactive steps to defuse the situation.
