In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Comrade Ibrahim Adamu Bature, the group expressed deep concern over what it described as a glaring lack of coordination and strategic leadership in the nation’s defence ministry, despite its crucial role in national security.

“For all practical purposes, the office of the Minister of Defence is non-functional. Mr. Badaru has failed to exhibit the strategic depth or political coordination necessary to tackle the grave insecurity currently plaguing Nigeria, especially the North,” Bature stated.

The AAG accused the Minister of demonstrating gross incompetence, with no visible roadmap for reinforcing Nigeria’s defence system or harmonising efforts between the armed forces, intelligence agencies, and civilian authorities.

The group lamented the sharp deterioration of security across several northern states—including Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger, Plateau, and Borno—coinciding with what they described as the Minister’s lacklustre performance and absence of civilian oversight of military operations.

“In the absence of political direction, service chiefs operate in silos, without accountability or a unified agenda. The Defence Ministry appears more focused on administrative tasks like fencing contracts and office renovations than confronting the realities of warfare,” the group said.

While commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to boost military funding and forge regional security partnerships, the group warned that such initiatives are being undermined by the “lack of effective civilian leadership” at the helm of the Defence Ministry.

“President Tinubu must urgently rescue the Ministry of Defence from this dangerous inertia. We need a Minister with vision, strategic depth, and the capacity to collaborate with service chiefs, engage the National Assembly, and reassure Nigerians that their government is in control,” Bature emphasized.

The AAG issued a vote of no confidence in Minister Badaru and urged the President to appoint a more competent and proactive individual to lead the ministry.

“Nigeria is facing a war-like situation. This is no time for trial-and-error leadership or political patronage. The lives of Nigerians must take precedence over party loyalty,” Bature concluded.
