In a Facebook post on Sunday, August 31, Ogbonna described the 50/50 formula as “absolute nonsense,” arguing that it reduces marriage to a mere partnership.

“I might be wrong, but I think it is childish for a man to sit his wife down and start negotiating a 50/50 split of expenses. To me, that is a clear sign he’s not yet prepared for marriage,” he wrote.

He clarified, however, that women should and often do contribute financially to the home — but not under a rigidly imposed ratio. “This idea of forcing any percentage on them makes marriage look like a business arrangement rather than a union,” he added.

Sharing his personal experience, Ogbonna revealed that in his eight years of marriage, he has never asked his wife, Onyinyechi, to state how much she would contribute toward family expenses.

“From daily groceries to the children’s clothes, school fees, rent — whatever the need is, whoever has the money at that moment simply covers it. Yet, Onyinyechi has never withheld her support,” he explained.

Ogbonna emphasized that his system may not work for everyone, but he urged couples to avoid unnecessary quarrels over 50/50 bills.

“Choose whatever method works for your family, but don’t drag your wife into petty arguments about splitting costs equally. It is nonsense and childish,” he concluded.
