Not Rivalry, But Sisterhood” – Nigerian Woman Explains Why Some Wives Support Polygamy

A Nigerian woman, Buidat Hudu Muhammed Lawal, has shed light on why some Muslim women not only accept polygamy but also encourage their husbands to take additional wives.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 9, Lawal, who revealed she is seeking a second wife for her husband, argued that polygamy should not always be seen as a source of rivalry. Instead, she described it as an arrangement rooted in sisterhood, shared responsibilities, and multiplying blessings under one roof.

“People say polygamy is the end of peace in marriage… but have you ever asked why some women actually encourage their husbands to take another wife? What if I told you, for some, it’s not about rivalry but about cooperation?” she wrote, urging critics to reconsider their perceptions.

According to her, many women already “share their husbands unofficially,” but polygamy brings honesty, transparency, and protection of rights. She concluded by questioning whether the real problem lies with polygamy itself or with societal conditioning that fuels negative perceptions of it.
