Robert Azibaola, a cousin of the former president, confirmed to Vanguard that Jonathan is safe, even though the tense situation in the West African nation has delayed his departure.

According to Azibaola, there is no immediate threat to Jonathan’s life, and arrangements for his evacuation are still being worked out. He revealed that he had spoken with Jonathan multiple times since reports of the coup emerged.

“Jonathan hasn’t been able to leave Guinea-Bissau, but he is safe. I’ve spoken with him several times today,” Azibaola said.

“There is no danger to his life. We remain in constant communication,” he added, noting that the family kept open contact with him throughout Thursday.

The coup erupted on Wednesday after military officers announced they had taken control of the country, halting electoral processes following Sunday’s disputed presidential election.

Jonathan was in Guinea-Bissau leading the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission when soldiers seized power.

The volatile political climate—marked by border closures, sporadic gunfire, and conflicting election claims—sparked widespread concern across the region, especially in Nigeria, where many anxiously awaited confirmation of Jonathan’s safety and secure evacuation.
