Outrage Erupts As ADC Demands Immediate Release Of Malami After EFCC Revokes Bail

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for withdrawing the bail earlier granted to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), describing the action as politically driven rather than a genuine law-enforcement measure.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the ADC said available facts show that Malami did not breach any of the conditions attached to his bail. The party argued that the decision to revoke his bail, coming shortly after his appearance at a political rally in Kebbi State, creates the impression that the move was intended to stifle his political activities instead of advancing justice.

While reaffirming its support for the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies in carrying out their lawful duties, the ADC warned that selective investigations or the use of anti-graft processes against opposition figures undermine the credibility of the anti-corruption fight and risk turning such agencies into tools for suppressing dissent.

According to the party, Malami, as a senior lawyer and former chief law officer of the country, fully understands the implications of violating bail terms and has cooperated with investigators throughout. The ADC maintained that attending a political gathering in his home state should not be interpreted as a breach of bail, especially in the absence of any clear violation.

The party expressed concern that the EFCC’s actions give the appearance of political bias, questioning whether the agency is acting impartially or aligning itself with partisan interests. It stressed that no government body has the constitutional authority to suspend a citizen’s political rights or restrict lawful political participation.

The ADC further noted that applying such restrictions specifically within Kebbi State suggests an attempt to undermine Malami’s political ambitions. The party insisted that while it remains firmly committed to the fight against corruption, politicising anti-corruption efforts amounts to corruption itself.

Citing recent Afrobarometer findings on corruption in Nigeria, the ADC urged the EFCC to reassess its priorities and demonstrate genuine commitment to tackling corruption across all levels of government.

The party concluded by reaffirming its belief in Malami’s innocence until proven otherwise by a court of law and demanded his immediate release on bail without conditions that infringe on his political rights.
