During the meeting, Obasanjo offered strategic advice to the party leadership and commended the steps taken so far by the NWC to stabilise and reposition the PDP. He urged the committee to remain firm in its resolve and enforce discipline within the party, stressing that membership of any political party requires strict adherence to its rules and regulations.
“Things are not beyond repair. Keep pushing. You are doing well,” Obasanjo told the delegation, encouraging the leadership to continue its work with commitment and wisdom.
The former president underscored the need for a strong and focused opposition in a democratic system, charging the PDP leadership to always place national interest above personal or factional considerations. He noted that Nigeria’s current challenges demand responsible and constructive engagement from all political actors.
Obasanjo also made it clear that he remains willing to share his experience and insights whenever needed, while expressing concern about the direction of the current Federal Government, saying it is unlikely to lead the country towards meaningful progress.
Responding, PDP National Chairman Kabiru Turaki thanked Obasanjo for his continued support and guidance, describing his counsel as invaluable to the party’s rebuilding efforts.
“Your wisdom and encouragement mean a lot to us,” Turaki said. “We came to draw from your vast experience and gain perspective on the future of our party and the state of the nation. Your advice will continue to guide us as we work to reunite and reposition the PDP.”
Turaki assured Obasanjo that the NWC is committed to fostering internal harmony, pursuing sincere reconciliation, and preparing the party to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
The PDP delegation included the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara; former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang; former Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu; the PDP governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Dr Oluwole Oluyede; members of the NWC; and other prominent party leaders from the South-West and across the country.
The NWC is expected to continue consultations with other party stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen unity and resolve internal disagreements within the PDP.
