In a personally signed statement released on Thursday, the President said he deeply empathised with the family, noting that he understands the pain of such a loss as a parent who has previously experienced the death of a loved one.

Tinubu offered prayers for divine comfort and strength for the bereaved family during their time of mourning.

“With profound sorrow, I commiserate with Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, and their entire family on the passing of their son, Nkanu Nnamdi,” the President said.

“As a parent myself who has endured the loss of a loved one, I know that no grief is as devastating as losing a child. I share in the family’s pain and mourn this tragic loss alongside them.

“Ms Adichie is a global literary icon whose works have brought inspiration and joy to countless people around the world. I pray that she and her family find strength, comfort and solace in God during this extremely difficult period. My thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband lost one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the age of 21 months, following a brief illness.
