The latest to join this list is Phillip Shaibu, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, whose ouster marks the 17th such case since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999. Shaibu’s removal ended a long struggle to maintain political influence in Edo State and, like many before him, was officially attributed to alleged gross misconduct.

Under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, a governor or deputy governor can be removed through impeachment. The process begins with a formal allegation of gross misconduct, after which the accused has the right to defend themselves. If the defence fails, the individual is removed; if successful, they remain in office. The Constitution outlines all the procedural steps required to carry out an impeachment.
