The biological father of Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has again appealed for assistance, saying he has been estranged from his children for almost two decades and longs for reconciliation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Kingsley Ughelumba, a native of Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State, revisited the painful experience in a recent social media interview, alleging that he has had little to no contact with his four sons — including the Fulham defender — for more than 18 years. He attributed the prolonged separation to the breakdown of his marriage to their mother, Ebere Bassey.

Ughelumba had first spoken publicly about the estrangement two years ago but returned with renewed emotion, saying he has been “suffering in silence” while still hoping to reconnect with his children someday.

He said his first three sons — Elvis, Mathew and Calvin — were born in Italy, while the youngest, Michael, was born in Ireland. The family later spent a brief period in London before the marriage ended.

“We had normal marital disagreements. I went to work one day, and before I returned, she had left with the children,” Ughelumba claimed.

According to him, their mother only contacted him again in 2017 when the children needed Nigerian passports. He said he provided the required documents and paid for their flight tickets.

“When they stayed with me then, I never spoke badly about their mother,” he said. “She stopped communicating with me after Calvin signed for a football club.”

Calvin Bassey, a graduate of Leicester City’s academy, rose to prominence after joining Rangers in 2020, where he won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup. He later secured a €23 million move to Ajax before joining Fulham in a €22 million transfer.

The 26-year-old defender has earned 43 caps for Nigeria and featured at the last two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Earlier in his career, he was registered under his father’s surname, Ughelumba, before later adopting his mother’s name — a decision he has publicly explained.

“He’s not really been in my life,” Bassey once said. “We lived with him, but that was when I was very young.

“From the age of six, it was just my mum and us boys. I knew that if I ever got the chance to put a name on the back of my shirt, it would be my mum’s name — my way of saying thank you.”

Ughelumba also recounted unsuccessful efforts to reconnect, including travelling from London to Leicester in 2020 and later to Abidjan during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I have not seen my children for a very long time,” he said.

“I have been suffering quietly. I have no issues with my children — my pain is with their mother. Even if I were a bad person, I could never be one where my children are concerned.”

As of the time of filing this report, Calvin Bassey had not publicly responded to his father’s claims.
