Royal Showdown: Alaafin Summoned To Court As Princes Challenge His Authority
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been summoned to appear either in person or through legal representation in a lawsuit filed against him by four Oyo princes at the Oyo State High Court in Oyo town.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The suit, filed under case number HOY/18/2026, names Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina, and Adeyemi Adebayo as claimants. They are seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against the monarch.
In their writ of summons, the princes requested a perpetual injunction restraining Oba Owoade, “either by himself, his servants, privies, or any other person or persons,” from attending or appearing at occasions they argue are inconsistent with the status of a symbolic traditional head of the Yoruba people.
They are also seeking an order barring the Alaafin from acting in any traditional or official capacity that could make him “subservient or inferior to any Oba in Yorubaland.”
Beyond the injunctions, the princes are requesting several declarations from the court, including that:
-
The office of the Alaafin of Oyo holds “immense historical importance not only in Yorubaland but also in Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond.”
-
The Alaafin is “the symbol of unity, togetherness, and the pivotal custodian of the cultural, customary, and traditional heritage of the Yoruba people.”
-
The Alaafin is the paramount ruler and holds appointing authority over all chieftaincies in Oyo town and its environs, including Oyo North and Oyo South.
The writ requires Oba Owoade to file an appearance personally or through legal counsel at the High Court registry or via registered post. The princes are also asking the court to prevent the Alaafin from acting under the authority of any other Oba or participating in council matters in a way that could undermine his status as the paramount ruler.
No hearing date has yet been set for the case.
The legal dispute arises from long-standing tensions over hierarchy and authority within the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which advises the state government on traditional matters. The conflict intensified following the reconstitution and grading of traditional rulers by successive Oyo State administrations, particularly with the elevation of certain monarchs and the creation of parallel traditional structures.
A central issue is the recognition of the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomoso as co-chairmen of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The Alaafin was notably absent from the council’s inauguration by Governor Seyi Makinde on January 16, 2026. Oba Owoade has also been publicly at odds with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, over long-standing supremacy claims within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy.
