The veteran actor, fondly known as Ebubedike, revealed that he has been falsely reported dead on about seven occasions, describing the reports as entirely baseless and mischievous.

Speaking to Vanguard on Tuesday, Edochie emphatically affirmed that he is alive and well.

“I’m alive and will only die when my Maker calls me home,” he stated.

The 78-year-old actor recounted several past instances of fake death stories, including claims that he had died abroad or perished in a plane crash.

“I have been declared dead around seven times. There were rumours that I died while travelling abroad. On other occasions, they said the plane I boarded from Enugu to Ethiopia crashed, and I didn’t survive,” he said.

Edochie also shared a troubling incident involving his wife.

“There was a morning when my wife was getting ready for church, and her phone rang with someone claiming I had passed away. Just last year, someone from Ghana alleged that I was already in the grave,” he added.

The actor revealed that he draws comfort from a lesson shared by the late nationalist Nnamdi Azikiwe, whom he once interviewed.

“Zik taught me that anyone wishing you death will die before you. All those who wished him ill died before him. That’s a lesson I’ve held onto,” Edochie explained.

Looking ahead to his 79th birthday on March 7, Edochie attributed his vitality to the longevity of his family.

“My father lived to 96, so longevity runs in my family,” he noted.

A recipient of the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and the AMVCA Industry Merit Award, Edochie remains one of Nollywood’s most celebrated and revered figures.

Despite recurring death hoaxes since 2012, the screen icon continues to enjoy widespread admiration from fans across Nigeria and beyond.
