According to the Cuban Interior Ministry, the speedboat — carrying 10 Cuban nationals residing in the United States — approached Cuban waters near Cayo Falcones in Villa Clara Province on Wednesday and opened fire on a Cuban patrol boat when asked to identify itself. Cuban forces then returned fire, resulting in the deaths of four people aboard the vessel.

Officials say weapons and military-style gear including rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, body armor, telescopic sights and camouflage uniforms were seized from the boat, and some of the detainees are alleged to have prior records of violent activity.

A Cuban border guard commander was among those injured in the clash, and emergency teams treated the wounded after the encounter, the ministry added.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is conducting its own investigation and gathering information before deciding how to respond, noting that most of the current information comes from Cuban authorities.

The incident has drawn strong reactions in Florida, where officials have demanded independent inquiries into the shooting and criticized the Cuban government’s account of the event.
