Speaking on Channels TV’s Morning Brief, Executive Secretary Lola Vivour-Adeniyi stressed the need to act on the reports and urged victims to come forward to support the investigation.
“As for the Simi case, we cannot ignore these reports. We have a duty to at least begin a preliminary investigation,” she said, highlighting the challenges of pursuing legal action without survivor testimony.
“The reality is that prosecuting the case will be very difficult without a survivor stepping forward,” Adeniyi added.
She encouraged anyone affected by sexual abuse, assault, aggression, or defamation to report their experiences, saying, “Victims should step forward to start the process, document their statements, and allow us to determine the next steps in addressing the matter.”
Meanwhile, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) announced plans to probe credible claims of child abuse or misconduct in daycare centres nationwide.
The announcement follows renewed social media discussions about Simi’s past posts regarding her time helping at her mother’s daycare in 2012 and 2013. The debate resurfaced after the singer spoke out against rape culture online, prompting some users to revisit her old posts.
While some interpreted her recollections as inappropriate, others argued they were harmless reflections of daily interactions with children. Simi later clarified that her posts described normal, playful experiences with children when she was 23 and not yet famous.
Despite her explanation, some online users called for formal scrutiny of daycare practices. In response, NAPTIP issued a public notice committing to investigate all credible reports of child abuse or misconduct in childcare settings.
The agency encouraged anyone with evidence or firsthand knowledge to report confidentially via X direct message or email at info@naptip.gov.ng, stating:
“Following recent public concerns regarding alleged incidents of child sexual abuse or misconduct in daycare settings in Nigeria, we are committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports. Anyone with factual information, evidence, or who was personally affected by the matters referenced is urged to reach out to us confidentially.”
