Tinubu Moves To Raise 2026 Budget To ₦67.7 Trillion, Seeks Senate Approval

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested the approval of the Senate of Nigeria for an increase of ₦9.3 trillion to the proposed 2026 budget, raising it from ₦58.47 trillion to ₦67.7 trillion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The request was presented in a letter read during plenary on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, shortly after lawmakers resumed from their two-week Eid-el-Fitr recess.

In the letter, Tinubu explained that the proposed increase is mainly to accommodate and regularise outstanding legacy capital projects inherited from previous administrations.

He noted that the adjustment would help ensure the completion of ongoing projects already included in earlier budget cycles.

The President also stated that part of the additional funding would be directed toward key transport infrastructure projects, in line with his administration’s development priorities.

He further explained that the revision is intended to maintain macroeconomic stability while easing pressure on the domestic financial market.

The proposal is part of ongoing efforts by the government to sustain economic reforms while delivering critical development projects across the country.

Following the presentation, Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further legislative review.

The National Assembly has yet to pass the 2026 Appropriation Bill, making this proposed adjustment the first major amendment to the budget before final approval.
