The Senate also resolved to send a high-level delegation led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to visit the affected communities and offer condolences to victims and residents.
These resolutions followed a motion jointly sponsored by Senator Diket Plang and Senator Dachung Mwadkon, who expressed concern over the rising insecurity in Plateau State, particularly in Kanam and Jos North.
While presenting the motion, Plang expressed concern that Plateau State, once widely regarded as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” has recently experienced a resurgence of violent attacks after a period of relative calm.
He referenced earlier incidents in Kanam and the deadly attack in Anguwan Rukuba on March 29, 2026, noting that the victims were going about their normal daily activities when they were attacked.
He further described the attacks as coordinated and targeted at civilians in densely populated areas, raising alarm over the worsening security situation.
The senator also highlighted an earlier attack in the Garga area of Kanam, where a joint security patrol was ambushed, resulting in casualties among security personnel.
During deliberations, lawmakers expressed concern about the multi-dimensional nature of the crisis, noting its economic, ethnic, and religious implications.
They warned that the ongoing violence is displacing residents, disrupting agricultural activities, and threatening food security in the region.
The Senate reiterated that protecting lives and property remains a core responsibility of government, urging security agencies to adopt more proactive measures, including establishing permanent security bases in vulnerable areas, enhancing intelligence gathering, and increasing surveillance.
Lawmakers also called for the recruitment of more personnel into the police and military to strengthen security operations.
As part of its resolutions, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the attack.
It also called on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide relief materials such as food, medical supplies, and shelter to displaced persons affected by the violence.
