The former lawmaker, a supporter of Atiku Abubakar, made the remarks in an interview with Punch, acknowledging the growing momentum around the Obi–Kwankwaso bloc.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said Kwankwaso has taken a leading role in reaching out to northern political stakeholders and is currently driving consultations across the region.

He described the former Kano State governor as the “arrowhead” of mobilisation efforts aimed at countering Atiku’s presidential ambition.

The source further alleged that Kwankwaso’s political strategy is long-term and tied to the evolving alliance, suggesting a future plan in which he could contest the presidency in 2031 if Obi emerges as the party’s candidate and completes a single-term agreement.

According to him, “We are aware of their activities, but there is no issue. It is part of normal political engagement. All sides are marketing their candidates, and a convergence is expected in the coming weeks.”

He added that Atiku remains a dominant political figure in the North and continues to enjoy strong backing from northern leaders, while also noting that Kwankwaso is actively engaging stakeholders to secure support for the Obi–Kwankwaso arrangement.

The source also claimed that despite differing ambitions, all aspirants within the alliance have agreed to support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s candidate, stressing that their primary objective is to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, an ally of Kwankwaso, declined to comment on the matter.
