Party sources who spoke with Punch said the duo are advancing a proposed one-term presidency deal in a bid to win the support of northern political stakeholders.
According to insiders, the arrangement is designed to convince the North to support a southern presidency in 2027, with Obi expected to serve only a single term if the plan materialises.
The ongoing consultations are also said to be part of a wider strategy to reduce support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the ADC primaries.
Multiple sources revealed that the Obi–Kwankwaso alliance has intensified engagements with key political actors, particularly in the North, to strengthen its influence within the party. Kwankwaso’s camp is also reported to have stepped up meetings with traditional rulers and influential stakeholders in recent weeks.
Sources further noted that the push for a joint ticket gained momentum even before Kwankwaso officially joined the ADC on March 30, 2026. On April 20, supporters of both politicians reportedly launched the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement to mobilise backing ahead of the primaries.
An ADC insider said the alliance is already gaining traction among northern stakeholders, with some reportedly shifting support away from Atiku and pledging backing for Kwankwaso’s camp.
One party source said the initiative is being framed around power rotation and fairness, arguing that the South should complete its expected tenure, while also promoting Obi’s one-term pledge as part of the agreement.
The source added that discussions are ongoing to formalise Obi’s one-term commitment, while Kwankwaso is also working to secure broader acceptance of the arrangement among northern leaders, though some stakeholders are still being engaged to build trust around the proposal.
