The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa.

Her emergence marks a historic moment, as Usman becomes the first woman to lead a political party at the national level in Nigeria.

In her acceptance speech, Usman expressed gratitude to party members for their confidence in her leadership and pledged to reposition the party for greater success. She also promised to prioritise unity, reconciliation, and strengthening internal party structures across the country.

She commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for his support and leadership, assuring members that she would not disappoint in her new role.

It will be recalled that Usman was earlier appointed on September 4, 2024, to head the party’s National Caretaker Committee following the expiration of the previous National Working Committee’s tenure.

She was later recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) following a series of court rulings, including a Federal High Court judgment in January 2026 and an Appeal Court affirmation in April.

Her election comes as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections, aiming to build on its performance in the 2023 polls.

During the convention, Governor Otti urged the new leadership to provide strong direction and expand the party’s influence nationwide.

Other elected officials include Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, and Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, among others.

The newly elected National Working Committee has since been sworn in and officially assumed office.
