In a statement released on Friday to mark Workers’ Day, the former presidential candidate commended workers in different sectors, describing them as vital to the nation’s survival.
He noted that Nigerian workers continue to support families, communities, institutions, and the broader economy despite facing severe economic challenges and uncertainty.
Obi expressed concern over the shrinking value of wages due to inflation and rising living costs, lamenting that many hardworking citizens are not receiving fair compensation for their efforts.
He stressed that the current minimum wage is no longer sufficient to guarantee even a basic standard of living, as increasing food prices, transportation costs, and general economic pressures continue to diminish purchasing power.
Highlighting the role of human capital in national development, he said a country’s progress depends heavily on the well-being and productivity of its workforce, adding that when workers struggle, the entire nation feels the impact.
Beyond economic concerns, Obi encouraged citizens to take an active role in governance through democratic participation, urging them to demand leadership grounded in competence, integrity, and compassion.
He concluded by advocating for a more just and equitable society that values and rewards labour, emphasizing that sustainable national growth must be built on fairness and respect for workers.
