The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused individuals it described as agents of the Federal Government of attempting to interfere in an ongoing court case involving Nafiu Bala Gombe.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that pressure was being mounted on Justice Nwite to withdraw from presiding over the matter.

The ADC warned that any effort to influence judicial proceedings would undermine the independence of the judiciary and pose a threat to democratic governance.

According to the party, there are alleged moves to compel the judge to step aside so the case could be reassigned to other judges perceived to be more politically favourable.

The statement said, “The party has uncovered a disturbing plot by desperate forces within the corridors of power to frustrate the course of justice by mounting pressure on Justice Nwite to step aside from the case.”

It further alleged that the situation forms part of a wider attempt to use state institutions against opposition groups.

The ADC expressed concern that the case was scheduled before Justice Nwite for May 8, 2026, despite claims that the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment had not been formally made available to the lower court.

It argued that the timing raised suspicions of a coordinated plan to trigger the judge’s withdrawal from the case.

“We have credible reasons to believe that this unusual haste is part of a calculated scheme to force Justice Nwite into recusing himself,” the statement added.

The party maintained that judicial recusal must follow established legal procedures and should not be influenced by political interests.

It warned that any attempt to remove the judge through pressure, intimidation, or administrative interference would amount to undue interference in the justice system.

The ADC called on the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), and other relevant authorities to urgently look into the matter.

It also urged the international community and diplomatic missions in Nigeria to take note of what it described as developments capable of weakening democratic institutions.

The party cautioned that attempts to engineer “favourable judges” could damage public trust in the judiciary.

It further stressed that Nigeria’s democratic system had suffered in the past due to alleged interference in judicial processes and called on judges to uphold their independence.

“The judiciary must remain the last hope of the common man, and not the last refuge of desperate politicians terrified of justice,” the statement concluded.
