Kwankwaso Endorses NDC’s Zoning Of 2027 Presidential Ticket To The South

Kwankwaso said the arrangement reflects fairness, balance, and the party’s power-sharing principle.

He made the remarks on Saturday at the NDC national convention in Abuja, where he addressed delegates, supporters, and party leaders.

According to him, the zoning of the presidential ticket to the South is necessary to allow the region complete its full eight-year cycle.

“I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South so that the region can complete its eight years,” he said. “This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.”

He also called on Nigerians and party loyalists to actively participate in the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Please register now,” he urged.

Kwankwaso’s endorsement came shortly after the NDC formally adopted a resolution to reserve its 2027 presidential ticket for Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The decision was reached during the party’s national convention following a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Afam Victor Ogene.

Announcing the resolution, the National Chairman of the NDC, Moses Cleopas, said the zoning formula was part of a broader strategy to ensure regional balance within the opposition coalition.

He added that the presidency would return to the North in 2031 after the South completes its tenure.

“It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” he said.

The party’s National Executive Committee also ratified the election of members of its National Working Committee during the convention.

The zoning arrangement is expected to strengthen the chances of southern aspirants, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, ahead of the party’s presidential primary.
