Obi also commended the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by David Mark, for providing what he described as a democratic platform that accommodated opposition figures in the country.

In a statement shared on his account shortly after the NDC’s first National Convention in Abuja on Saturday, Obi revealed that he and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were pushed out of the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), respectively, due to ongoing legal disputes within the parties.

The former presidential candidate lamented that some individuals who once benefited from democratic governance are now contributing to actions he believes threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

According to Obi, the current political leadership is attempting to silence and frustrate opposition voices, warning that such actions must not be allowed to succeed.

He stated that Nigeria’s democracy is facing a serious crisis and called on opposition forces to unite in order to rescue the country.

Obi said the successful convention reflected Nigerians’ growing desire for political change and praised the NDC leadership, led by Seriake Dickson, for embracing new members at what he described as a critical moment in the nation’s history.

He further criticised what he called increasing attacks on democratic principles, including intimidation, political manipulation, coercion, and suppression of opposition voices.

The former governor also painted a grim picture of the country’s economic and security situation, citing rising poverty, unemployment, inflation, business collapse, and worsening insecurity across many parts of Nigeria.

According to Obi, millions of Nigerians are struggling because leadership has failed to prioritise national interest above personal gain.

Despite the challenges, he urged Nigerians not to lose hope, insisting that the country can still be rebuilt through unity, justice, accountability, competence, and inclusive governance.
