Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, was screened on Saturday as an aspirant seeking the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 Rivers election.

His participation in the APC screening process has intensified speculation that the federal lawmaker could be considering a move from the PDP to the ruling party, although he has not publicly announced any defection plans.

Chinda is among two notable political allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who secured APC governorship nomination forms ahead of the contest.

The second aspirant is Dax George-Kelly, the Director-General of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA).

However, questions have been raised regarding George-Kelly’s qualification to participate in the race while still holding a political appointment.

The Presidency, through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had earlier instructed all political appointees seeking elective offices in 2027 to resign on or before March 30, 2026.

Other politicians contesting for the APC governorship ticket in Rivers State include Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former governorship candidate Tonye Cole.
