A senior figure within Jonathan’s circle reportedly disclosed on Sunday that the former president’s team settled on the PDP after extensive consultations on the political platform considered most favourable for his potential comeback bid.

According to the source, Jonathan is weighing a return to power as supporters believe his leadership experience could help address the country’s growing economic hardship and rising poverty levels.

The reports of a possible PDP comeback have already sparked intense competition among several support groups seeking to purchase the party’s presidential nomination form on his behalf.

The PDP reportedly fixed its presidential nomination form at ₦100 million.

Sources said the various groups are racing against time to secure the form before the submission deadline on Tuesday.

One diaspora-based group, the Goodluckan Movement, is reportedly insisting it should be given the responsibility of purchasing the form, claiming it represents Nigerians globally more than northern-based groups making similar moves.

Among the groups said to be mobilising support for Jonathan are Coalition for Jonathan, Goodies Movement, The New Nigeria movement, Almajiri Network, Arewa for Good Governance, Northern Youth Alliance for Good Governance, Northern Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan, Arewa for Better Government, and North Youth Progressive Movement.

Insiders claimed that each of the groups had pledged to raise the ₦100 million required for the nomination form.

Although Jonathan had previously informed supporters urging him to contest in 2027 that he would carry out wider consultations before making a final decision, sources now claim he has privately resolved to enter the race.

The former president is reportedly positioning himself as a candidate capable of reviving the economy and easing the hardship facing many Nigerians.

One of the leaders of the support groups, Dr. Tom Ohikere, had publicly urged Jonathan to immediately obtain a presidential nomination form from any political party of his choice ahead of the election.

Speculation over Jonathan’s likely political platform intensified after the Turaki-led PDP faction reportedly announced that the former president had satisfied conditions required to contest under the party.

The faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, also stated that Jonathan had already completed his online PDP registration.

He dismissed rumours questioning Jonathan’s membership status, noting that neither the former president’s media team nor close associates had denied the reports.

In 2022, a northern Almajiri group purchased an APC presidential nomination form for Jonathan, but he later distanced himself from the move and the form was never submitted.

However, political observers now point to Jonathan’s ongoing legal action at the Federal High Court in Abuja as a sign that he may be serious about another presidential bid.

Jonathan is seeking the dismissal of a suit filed by a lawyer attempting to stop him from contesting again on the basis that he had already completed two terms in office.

The court case is expected to determine whether the former president can legally challenge incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
