While several incumbent governors were successfully screened on Saturday, Fubara, alongside Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, was initially absent from the exercise.
Reacting to concerns over his absence, the Chairman of the screening committee and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, explained that governors with official state duties were excused.
He stated that multiple governors were absent and that no individual was being singled out, adding that state responsibilities could justify such absences.
According to him, any governor with pressing official engagements was allowed flexibility to attend within the stipulated timeframe.
However, Fubara later arrived at the Plateau State Governor’s Lodge, the venue of the screening, around 3pm on Sunday.
Reports indicate that he spent about 20 minutes inside the screening room before abruptly leaving, with his mood described as visibly agitated.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the governor declined to speak with journalists who had waited for hours to speak with him.
When approached for comments on the outcome of the exercise, Fubara simply responded, “No comment,” before leaving the scene.
Following the incident, uncertainty has reportedly grown around his political future and re-election prospects within the APC process.
Fubara has been involved in a prolonged political dispute with his former ally and now political rival, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
There have also been ongoing speculations that Wike may be backing a possible replacement for Fubara, with some reports linking the move to House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda.
