Adeboye was reportedly taken to court after making claims about the singer’s daughter on social media.

Reacting to the situation, Sowore recalled a controversial post Adekunle Gold made years ago about former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to Sowore, the post circulated widely at the time without any legal consequences because it was protected under freedom of expression.

The post, which surfaced during the 2012 nationwide protests against the removal of fuel subsidy under Jonathan’s administration, read: “Dear God, if you give us Dagrin back, we will give you Jonathan in return.”

In a post shared on , Sowore wrote: “@AdekunleGold openly criticised former President @GoodluckJonathan in 2012. At the time, it was rightly regarded as free speech, and if he had been arrested over those tweets, many of us would have protested for his release.”

He questioned why someone who once benefited from free expression would later support legal action over online comments and social media exchanges.

“How can someone enjoy freedom of speech when they are powerless, then criminalise it once they become influential? Freedom of expression should apply equally to celebrities, politicians, activists, and ordinary Nigerians online,” Sowore stated.

The activist also called on the Nigeria Police Force to stop acting in the interest of wealthy and influential individuals.

He further urged the judiciary to avoid imposing what he described as excessive punishments for online speech, arguing that such matters should not be treated as criminal offences.
