Tiwa Savage Reveals What She Misses Most About Don Jazzy
Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has revealed that she only fully understood the emotional support a record label can provide after leaving Mavin Records.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Tiwa Savage joined the label in 2012 before exiting in 2019 to sign with Universal Music Group. Despite her departure, she said Mavin still feels like family to her.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by Joey Akan, the singer explained that the kind of label an artist signs with can greatly affect their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Reflecting on her time at Mavin, Tiwa said she often turned to Don Jazzy and fellow label mates for comfort whenever she faced online controversies or emotional struggles.
According to her, that sense of family and emotional support is something she no longer experiences with an international label structure.
She also advised artists to carefully evaluate whether a label genuinely cares about them as individuals or simply views them as profit-making machines.
She said, “Who you signed to is very important and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin. Whenever there’s a controversy online I’d run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit on the floor or bed with other Mavin acts and we would talk about it. I would cry if I had to cry and we would get through it.
“But being with a [foreign] label, they don’t really care about your personal stuff. So, I can’t really go to the Empire office and cry. I miss that part of it.”
