The Tigers appeared set for extra time before Oli McBurnie struck deep into stoppage time to seal a famous return to the top flight after nine years away.

Ajayi, in one of the biggest matches of his career, delivered a composed and disciplined performance in central defence alongside John Egan, helping Hull withstand long periods of pressure in a tense and physical encounter.

The decisive breakthrough came in the fifth minute of added time when Yu Hirakawa’s cross slipped through goalkeeper Sol Brynn, allowing McBurnie to react quickest and score from close range, sending Hull supporters into wild celebrations.

The 32-year-old defender joined Hull City on a free transfer last summer after leaving West Bromwich Albion, where he spent six seasons and built a reputation as a dependable Championship centre-back, though he fell short of achieving promotion during his time there.

Now, after several near misses in previous campaigns, the 54-cap Super Eagles defender finally earns another opportunity to compete in the English Premier League.

Hull’s promotion marks a major turnaround under manager Sergej Jakirovic, after finishing in the lower half of the table the previous season before building strong momentum during the play-offs.

Their route to Wembley began with a goalless semi-final first leg against Millwall, followed by a convincing 2–0 away win at The Den to secure their place in the final.

The final also came with controversy, as Middlesbrough were initially eliminated earlier in the play-off campaign before developments involving disciplinary action against another club reshaped the standings and pathway to Wembley.

Despite the off-field drama, Hull City ultimately capitalised on their opportunity to complete a memorable promotion campaign and return to the Premier League.
