PDP Sparks Nationwide Reactions After Presenting Jonathan With 2027 Presidential Ticket

The group also explained the circumstances that led to a last-minute change of venue for its national convention, which was convened to ratify Jonathan’s candidature.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP alleged that the management of the event centre originally booked for the convention withdrew its approval after receiving what it described as pressure from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

According to the statement, the venue operators informed the party that they had been threatened with the revocation of their Certificate of Occupancy and possible demolition of the facility if the PDP was allowed to hold its event there.

The party said its leadership subsequently held an emergency meeting and decided against confronting security personnel reportedly stationed at the venue or attempting to proceed with the event there by force.

Despite the setback, the convention was later relocated to another venue where delegates reportedly ratified Jonathan’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate and presented him with a certificate of return.

The PDP condemned the alleged actions of the FCT Minister, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution Wike against actions it claimed could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

The party further stated that, with Jonathan’s nomination now confirmed, it is fully prepared for the 2027 general elections and will take all necessary steps to ensure its active participation in the electoral process.
