Ribadu made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the opening of the 15th National Security Seminar, themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Border Security Architecture for National Stability.”
Represented by the Director of Policy and Strategy at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ambassador Yazid Gbemudu, the NSA stressed that Nigeria’s national stability and territorial integrity are heavily dependent on the effectiveness of its border security system.
He noted that while Nigeria’s vast land and maritime borders create opportunities for trade, regional cooperation, and economic growth, they also leave the country vulnerable to a variety of transnational crimes and security threats.
According to Ribadu, criminal networks exploit weak border controls to facilitate terrorism, illegal arms movement, smuggling activities, human trafficking, and unlawful migration, posing significant risks to national security and development.
“These challenges highlight the urgent need for a coordinated and comprehensive approach to border management. Poor border governance creates loopholes that can be exploited by terrorists and criminal groups, ultimately threatening the nation’s security and development objectives,” he stated.
The NSA further described the National Border Management Strategy as a critical component of Nigeria’s modern border security framework, designed to promote a more integrated and effective approach to securing the country’s borders.
He explained that the strategy focuses on improving intelligence sharing, strengthening border infrastructure, enhancing surveillance capabilities, and modernising border management processes.
Ribadu also highlighted the deployment of Border Management Information Systems and other technological solutions at major entry and exit points, noting that these measures have improved data gathering, traveller screening, and migration monitoring.
He called for the full implementation of an integrated border management system to boost collaboration among security agencies, intelligence services, and law enforcement bodies.
According to him, stronger intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, and harmonised border procedures are essential for tackling emerging security challenges.
The NSA also advocated increased investment in technology-driven security measures, including biometric identification systems, advanced surveillance tools, and data-based security frameworks to strengthen Nigeria’s border protection efforts.
