Starmer made the announcement on Monday, June 22, less than two years after taking up the position.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said in an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street.

He explained that the process to select a new Labour Party leader would begin in July, while he would continue serving as prime minister until a successor is chosen, expected to take office by September.

Reports suggest Starmer had been facing declining popularity among voters, according to recent polls. He reportedly spent the weekend at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s countryside residence, holding discussions with close allies before making his decision public.

Pressure within the Labour Party is said to have intensified following the strong electoral performance of Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham in Makerfield, where he secured 55 per cent of the vote.

Although Starmer had previously insisted he would remain in office and resist any leadership challenge, party insiders claimed his position weakened significantly after Burnham’s victory.

Some Labour MPs reportedly believe Burnham is better positioned to challenge Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in the next general election.

Starmer, who assumed office in July 2024, exits after a tenure marked by political difficulties, policy reversals, internal party tensions, and several ministerial resignations.
