Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Wike expressed confidence in Gbajabiamila’s integrity, insisting that the Chief of Staff had no involvement in the alleged scandal.
The minister also rejected calls by opposition figures for Gbajabiamila’s suspension or dismissal, describing the demands as baseless and politically motivated.
According to Wike, the controversy is part of an attempt to discredit President Tinubu’s administration by targeting one of his closest aides.
“I know the Chief of Staff very, very well. He had nothing to do with it. People are saying the Chief of Staff must be sacked. By whom? The opposition? Why don’t they form a government first, then they can sack whoever they want,” Wike said.
His remarks come days after President Bola Tinubu directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) and all issues connected to it.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
President Tinubu instructed the anti-corruption agency to conclude its investigation and submit a detailed report within 30 days.
