2027: Full List Of Presidential Candidates, Parties That Signed Peace Accord

Presidential candidates and representatives of political parties gathered in Abuja on Tuesday to sign the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The agreement was organised by the National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), as part of efforts to promote peaceful elections and reduce political tensions.

Tinubu Signs Through Akume, APC Chairman

The accord was signed on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, alongside APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed the agreement personally, alongside Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC).

National chairmen and representatives of several political parties also participated in the ceremony held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Among the parties represented were the Labour Party, Democratic Leadership Alliance, National Democratic Party, National Rescue Movement, Social Democratic Party, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party and Zenith Labour Party, among others.

Accord Targets Peaceful 2027 Elections

The National Peace Accord is aimed at encouraging political actors to commit to peaceful conduct before, during and after the 2027 elections.

The ceremony featured goodwill messages from key national and international stakeholders, including INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan; Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu; European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot; and Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Patrick Egloff.

The formal signing also involved National Assembly and governorship candidates, political party chairmen, presidential candidates, the INEC chairman and the Inspector-General of Police.

The organisers said the accord was intended to strengthen democratic stability, discourage violence and promote peaceful political competition ahead of the 2027 polls.
