The opposition party said an impartial international inquiry would help establish the facts surrounding the incident, ensure accountability, and restore public confidence in the investigation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping had raised critical questions that could only be addressed through a transparent and credible probe.

According to him, a UN-backed investigation would uncover the truth, deliver justice for the victims and their families, and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.

‘This Is Not About Politics’

The NDC stressed that its support for Governor Makinde’s position was driven by the need for transparency rather than partisan interests.

It maintained that the abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers was a national security issue that should not be reduced to political debate or speculation.

“This is not about politics but about ensuring that every question surrounding the incident is answered through a transparent, credible and independent process that Nigerians can trust,” the party said.

The party argued that an internationally supported investigation would strengthen the credibility of the findings and reassure Nigerians who have expressed concerns over the circumstances surrounding the attack.

It urged the Federal Government to cooperate with all lawful efforts aimed at uncovering the truth and preventing similar incidents in the future.

According to the NDC, the protection of Nigerian children should never become a subject of political disagreement, institutional rivalry, or unverified claims.

“The safety and security of Nigerian children should not be subjected to political disagreements or speculation,” the statement added.

The party further called on the Federal Government to support any credible and lawful process designed to determine exactly what transpired during the abduction.

It noted that an independent inquiry would not only establish how the attackers carried out the kidnapping but would also examine the response of security agencies and other relevant government institutions.

According to the NDC, the findings could expose operational shortcomings, strengthen future security responses, improve the country’s justice system, and reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture.

Governor Makinde had earlier advocated for a UN-led investigation, arguing that an independent international probe would enhance the credibility of the outcome and address lingering public concerns over the incident.

His call followed growing demands for a comprehensive account of how the attackers infiltrated the affected communities and the measures taken by security agencies to rescue the victims.

The abduction in Oriire sparked nationwide concern and renewed calls for stronger security around schools, particularly those in rural and vulnerable communities.

It also reignited discussions on the need for improved intelligence gathering, enhanced protection of educational institutions, and better coordination among security agencies.

The NDC maintained that a thorough and transparent investigation would provide valuable lessons for the country and help strengthen measures to safeguard pupils, teachers, and other school personnel from future attacks.
