Fresh Twist: US Lawmaker Moves Motion Seeking Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Speaking on the floor of the U.S. Congress on Thursday, James alleged that the Nigerian government had failed to adequately protect innocent citizens from violence and called for Kanu to be retried in line with Nigeria’s Constitution, with access to legal representation, medical care and detention conditions consistent with international law.

The congressman also described Nigeria as one of the most dangerous places in the world for Christians, alleging that extremist groups such as Boko Haram continue to operate without an effective response from the authorities.

James further claimed that Kanu was convicted after what he described as an unfair trial for speaking out on issues affecting Nigeria, alleging that the IPOB leader is serving a life sentence on what he called unfounded terrorism charges.

Appealing to fellow lawmakers, James urged support for his motion seeking Kanu’s release.

“I implore my colleagues to support my bill for the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and unconditionally,” he said.

He also questioned continued U.S. financial assistance to Nigeria, stating, “America gives billions of dollars to Nigeria. We will not continue to fund Christian genocide.”

According to James, the United States has a moral responsibility to defend religious freedom and ensure that Christians can practise their faith without fear of persecution.
