Transfer Bombshell: Tolu Arokodare Reveals Stunning Reaction To Ajax Switch

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has revealed that he initially thought his agent was joking when he was informed of Ajax’s interest before completing a season-long loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 25-year-old officially joined the Dutch giants on Wednesday and will wear the number 99 jersey during his time in Amsterdam. The agreement includes an option for Ajax to sign him permanently next summer in a deal reportedly worth around £17 million.

Speaking after his unveiling, Arokodare admitted that representing Ajax was something he never imagined would happen despite the club’s global reputation.

“I could never have imagined that I would play here. Not because I didn’t want to, but because everyone knows this club. In Nigeria, not many people watch the Eredivisie, but everyone knows Ajax,” he said.

The Nigerian international disclosed that he was stunned when his representative first mentioned Ajax’s interest.

“When my agent told me Ajax wanted me, I thought he was joking. I never expected it. The moment I realised it was true, I knew I wanted the move because it’s the biggest club in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in Europe,” he added.

Arokodare joined Wolves from Belgian side Genk in a £24 million transfer last summer and scored six goals in 38 appearances across all competitions during his debut campaign in England.

However, his future at Molineux became the subject of intense speculation during the transfer window, with Italian Serie A club Fiorentina among the teams reportedly interested in signing him.

His exit follows a difficult period at Wolves, where reports earlier this month alleged that he refused to leave the training pitch after being informed he was no longer part of the first-team training group. The striker publicly denied the claims on social media.

Confirming the move, Wolverhampton Wanderers announced that Arokodare had joined Ajax on a season-long loan after starting just one of the club’s final 10 Premier League matches last season.

The striker will not feature in Ajax’s UEFA Conference League second-leg clash against FK Vojvodina on Thursday, having not been registered for the fixture. Ajax head into the encounter with a comfortable 4-1 aggregate advantage as they look to seal qualification for the next round.
