Why Modi Invited Tinubu To BRICS Summit In India — The REAL Reason Revealed
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited President Bola Tinubu to attend the upcoming BRICS Leaders’ Summit, scheduled to take place in New Delhi from September 12 to 13.
The invitation was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, who described Nigeria’s participation in the summit as significant given the country’s economic and demographic influence in Africa and beyond.
Singh said Nigeria was expected to play an important role at the summit as a BRICS partner country and expressed hope that President Tinubu would lead a high-level Nigerian delegation to the event.
He said, “President of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has been invited to the BRICS Summit, which is going to take place in New Delhi in a few weeks from now, and we are very hopeful that the honourable president of Nigeria will be leading a high-powered delegation for the BRICS Summit very soon.”
Explaining why Nigeria’s participation was important, the envoy pointed to the country’s economic and population size.
He said, “Why do we feel that Nigeria’s participation as a BRICS partner country is important? Because as Africa’s largest economy and one of the most populous nations in the world now, Nigeria as a partner country brings immense strategic importance.”
According to Singh, Nigeria and India have continued to cooperate and support each other at international forums, including their respective aspirations for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council.
The Indian envoy also revealed that approximately 60,000 Indians currently reside in Nigeria, with many having become deeply integrated into Nigerian society. Some Indian families, he noted, are now in their second and third generations in the country.
He described the Indian community in Nigeria as an important bridge between both nations, particularly in education, healthcare, culture and commerce.
Singh disclosed that bilateral trade between Nigeria and India is approaching $10 billion, while more than 200 Indian companies currently operate in Nigeria and provide employment to nearly 100,000 Nigerians.
He added that cooperation between Abuja and New Delhi was expanding across several strategic sectors, including defence, energy, healthcare, agriculture and technology.
The High Commissioner expressed confidence that Tinubu’s participation in the forthcoming BRICS summit would further deepen relations between Nigeria and India while creating new opportunities for cooperation and integration among countries of the Global South.
