Why Are You Still Complaining?’ – Oyedele Responds To Nigerians Over World Bank Loan

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has criticised Nigerians who took to social media to attack the World Bank over its decision to extend loans to Nigeria.

Oyedele said the backlash was largely due to a lack of understanding of how international lending and financing arrangements work.

The minister spoke on Thursday in Abuja during a media briefing on the Federal Government’s economic reform scorecard, where he highlighted the achievements, costs and impact of reforms introduced by the administration since 2023.

According to Oyedele, some Nigerians flooded the World Bank’s social media platforms with criticism over its decision to lend money to Nigeria.

He said the comments became so abusive that the international financial institution was eventually forced to disable comments on its social media account.

Oyedele argued that the incident demonstrated that many Nigerians were unfamiliar with the procedures governing international loans and how such financing arrangements are structured.

He said:

“People went to the social media account of the World Bank to go and be abusing them that they’re giving Nigeria loan. World Bank just switched off the comments. We’ve gotten the loan because that’s not how the system works.

“Some people who have no knowledge of how it works. They said why is government allowing some people withdraw money here and they’re not giving to the rest of us.
