Aisha Yesufu Sparks Debate Over 2027 Election, Says ‘INEC Is Not The Problem

Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has called for credible and transparent elections, warning that failure to ensure free and fair polls could trigger civil unrest.

Yesufu made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where she discussed Nigeria’s electoral system and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the activist, INEC as an institution is not the fundamental problem affecting Nigeria’s elections, but rather the individuals working within the commission.

She urged Nigerians to demand accountability from INEC officials and insist that they uphold democratic principles instead of simply relying on the commission to voluntarily do the right thing.

Yesufu also described election day as an opportunity for Nigerians to bring about the change they desire by voting for credible candidates capable of improving the country.

“There is no better day for revolution than election day. I’ve always said that INEC is not the problem. The people in INEC are the problem. So everybody should tell their members who are in INEC, police or whatever to do the right thing,” she said.

She added that Nigerians would be present in large numbers on election day and could collectively demand that the electoral process be conducted properly.

“Because on that day we will stand and be on the streets. Nobody is going to work. Nobody is travelling. Everybody will be there. So we can easily do that revolution that people call for on that day,” Yesufu stated.

She stressed that Nigerians should not depend solely on the goodwill of INEC officials but should collectively demand that everyone involved in the electoral process acts responsibly.

“So that’s how we are going to follow it. There’s nothing like you are depending on the goodness of INEC. Everybody must do the right thing,” she said.
