BREAKING: ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike, Shuts Down Plateau University Over Unresolved Demands

Academic activities have been suspended at Plateau State University, Bokkos, following the declaration of an indefinite strike by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The ASUU-PLASU Congress reached the decision at a meeting held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the university management failed to satisfactorily address several demands raised by the lecturers.

In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Vincent Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Iliya, ASUU said management had earlier been given a 14-day ultimatum to resolve the outstanding issues.

The ultimatum was issued on August 11, but expired without what the union considered a satisfactory response. Although the university management responded in a letter dated August 18, ASUU said the response failed to adequately address its concerns.

The union explained that the failure to resolve the issues left its members with no option but to commence industrial action after previous efforts to reach an agreement proved unsuccessful.

According to ASUU-PLASU, the strike has received the backing of the union’s National Executive Council.

Among the key demands is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for university staff.

The lecturers are also demanding the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, alongside the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 2026.

Staff welfare and security also featured prominently in the union’s demands. ASUU called for the provision of safe and secure accommodation for staff and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence to strengthen security.

The union further accused the university management of intimidating its leaders and demanded an end to what it described as acts of intimidation against union officials.

In addition, ASUU is demanding the payment of 22 months’ outstanding arrears relating to the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards.

Following the Congress resolution, all ASUU-PLASU members were directed to immediately withdraw from academic activities.

The union said the strike would continue indefinitely until the outstanding issues are resolved.

ASUU-PLASU appealed to its members, students and other stakeholders to understand the reasons behind the industrial action, insisting that the decision became necessary because its demands remained unresolved despite earlier attempts at dialogue.
