Sowore Tackles Atiku Over Fuel Subsidy Plan, Issues Strong Warning To Nigerians

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has warned Nigerians against being misled by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s promise to restore the petrol subsidy if elected president.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had pledged to reintroduce the subsidy in 2027, arguing that its removal by President Bola Tinubu’s administration had failed to deliver meaningful benefits to Nigerians.

Sowore, however, rejected Atiku’s position, insisting that the AAC had remained consistent in its opposition to the subsidy removal and had raised concerns about the policy before other political actors.

In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, Sowore accused Atiku and other opposition politicians of changing their positions based on political circumstances.

He said:

“Don’t let Atiku Abubakar and his clowning group deceive you about fuel subsidy or pretend that they are responsible for the panic now gripping the failed Bola Tinubu regime.”

Sowore further claimed that the AAC’s position at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt had contributed to pressure on the Tinubu administration to respond to concerns over the policy.

He said:

“It was our firm and uncompromising stance at the Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt that sent the Tinubu regime scampering.”

According to the AAC candidate, his party had consistently maintained its position on the fuel subsidy issue, unlike what he described as the shifting positions of established political parties.

He added:

“We have been consistent on this issue, while these establishment politicians keep shifting positions according to political convenience and foreign capitalist control.

“They should not be allowed to rewrite history or suddenly present themselves as the opposition.”
