Nigerian Army Reacts After Hackers Target Official Account

The Nigerian Army has confirmed an unauthorised attempt to gain access to its official account, describing the incident as a cybersecurity breach.

The Army said the attempted breach occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and immediately triggered technical and protective measures to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the measures were also aimed at protecting the integrity of information shared through the platform.

She assured the public that efforts were ongoing to fully secure the account and restore exclusive administrative control to the Nigerian Army.

The Army urged members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders to be cautious of any content posted on the affected account during the period of the breach.

It specifically advised the public to disregard any suspicious, misleading, unauthorised or unverified posts from the account, stressing that such content should not be regarded as the official position of the Nigerian Army.

According to the statement, “The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account. The incident, which occurred at about 1700 hours (5pm) today, 29 August 2026, is being treated as a cybersecurity breach, with immediate technical and protective measures activated to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.”

The Army added that it remained committed to maintaining information integrity, operational security and responsible strategic communication.

It therefore encouraged members of the public and the media to verify information through its other official communication channels until the issue is fully resolved.

The statement further noted, “The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.”

The Army said further updates would be provided as efforts to resolve the incident continue.
