Nigerian Army Raises Alarm As Official Account Is Hacked

The Nigerian Army has raised concerns over an attempted cyberattack on its official account after a series of unauthorised posts promoting memecoins appeared on the platform.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the suspicious activity was detected on Saturday, with the posts reportedly beginning to appear on the military’s official handle at about 3:50 p.m.

The development prompted the Nigerian Army to activate emergency security measures aimed at preventing further unauthorised access and restoring complete control of the account.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the military had identified an attempt to compromise the official account and immediately commenced efforts to secure it.

Anele explained that both technical and protective measures had been deployed to contain the incident, safeguard the account and protect the credibility of information shared through the platform.

She also urged members of the public and media organisations to exercise caution and disregard suspicious posts or information published through the affected account until the security breach is fully resolved.

The Army assured Nigerians and other stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to restore exclusive administrative control of the account and prevent any further unauthorised activity.

The incident comes barely two weeks after the Defence Headquarters reportedly disclosed that its own official account had been compromised, raising fresh concerns about the cybersecurity of Nigeria’s military-related social media platforms.
