Tension In Lagos As Police Teargas Pensioners Protesting Over Grievances
Police officers reportedly disrupted a protest by pensioners in Lagos on Monday after security personnel fired tear gas at retirees who had gathered at the Lagos House in Ikeja to press for the payment of their outstanding entitlements.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the protesters, operating under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme, assembled at the government premises to draw attention to issues affecting their welfare and seek urgent intervention from the Lagos State Government.
The pensioners were demanding the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards, as well as the payment of outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they said remained unpaid.
The demonstration reportedly became tense when police officers fired tear gas at the protesters, forcing some of the retirees to flee the area.
The development reportedly angered the pensioners, who questioned the use of force against them while they were peacefully demanding payment of benefits they claimed were legally due to them.
The retirees maintained that their demands were focused on the implementation of approved pension adjustments, settlement of accumulated arrears and payment of other outstanding entitlements.
Meanwhile, a separate security incident has reportedly claimed the life of a security officer identified as Stanley at Royale Estate in the Sangotedo area of Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle entered the estate and allegedly opened fire on the security officer before fleeing the scene.
According to Bush Radio Academy, a source familiar with the incident said the assailants arrived at the estate sometime between 10pm and 11pm and headed directly towards Stanley, who was reportedly on duty.
The source, who spoke anonymously due to security concerns, alleged that the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to the head.
The circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear, while efforts to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible are reportedly ongoing.
