Honest Ahanor Makes EPL History As Chelsea And Palace Announce Him On Same Day

Eighteen-year-old defender Honest Ahanor has made Premier League history after being announced by Chelsea and Crystal Palace on the same day, September 1.

Ahanor, who currently plays for Atalanta, has agreed to join Chelsea in a permanent transfer worth up to £40 million next summer. However, he will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at Crystal Palace before completing his move to Stamford Bridge.

The unusual transfer arrangement saw the teenager unveiled separately by both Chelsea and Palace, with Ahanor featuring in photoshoots wearing the colours and badges of the two Premier League clubs on the same day.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the arrangement means Ahanor will represent Palace throughout the current campaign despite Chelsea already securing an agreement for his permanent transfer from Atalanta.

“I’m very happy to be here and to be a part of this great family,” Ahanor said in an interview with Crystal Palace’s official website.

“To be at one of the best clubs for young players in the Premier League is something which makes me grateful and excited,” he added.

The deal has attracted attention because Chelsea already have another player on loan at Palace. The Blues recently sent Axel Disasi to the Eagles on a reported £3 million loan deal, while Palace defender Maxence Lacroix moved to Chelsea for £52 million in August.

Premier League regulations generally restrict clubs from loaning more than one player to another team in the same division. However, Chelsea’s arrangement for Ahanor avoids the restriction because Atalanta, rather than Chelsea, have loaned the defender to Palace before his permanent transfer to Stamford Bridge.

The structure of the deal has consequently generated renewed discussion about Chelsea’s approach to Premier League regulations as the club continues to invest heavily in young talents from across Europe.

Chelsea have previously faced scrutiny over other transfer and financial arrangements, including deals involving hotels close to Stamford Bridge and the ownership structure of their women’s team. The club also attracted attention for offering players lengthy contracts following the arrival of its American ownership group in 2022, although relevant regulations were subsequently amended.

Ahanor’s move to Chelsea follows the club’s interest in him after securing the signing of Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra in July.

The versatile teenager, who primarily operates as a left-back, joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer in a deal reportedly worth €16 million plus €4 million in add-ons.

He made 28 Serie A appearances during the previous campaign and established himself as a regular in Atalanta’s starting lineup. He also made his Champions League debut in September, featuring in Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge.

His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the Italy senior squad in May for friendly matches against Luxembourg and Greece.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also sanctioned the departure of striker Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig in a deal reportedly worth £14.6 million, including add-ons.

Guiu joined Chelsea from Barcelona in July 2024 and went on to make 29 first-team appearances for the London club, scoring eight goals.
