Carrick Under Threat Rooney Delivers Stark Warning Over Man United Job

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has warned that manager Michael Carrick is already facing significant pressure at the club and may not have the luxury of waiting until next summer to address weaknesses within his squad.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the former United captain criticised the club’s transfer activity during the summer window, arguing that managers are often the first to face consequences when results fail to meet expectations.

United have endured an inconsistent beginning to the campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Hull before responding with a dramatic win over Ipswich. However, they were subsequently held to a 2-2 draw by Everton, leaving Carrick with just one victory from his opening three league fixtures.

Speaking on Stick to United, Rooney suggested that Carrick should continue pushing for reinforcements rather than simply settle for the squad currently at his disposal.

Rooney questioned the decision to focus heavily on midfield recruitment while other areas, particularly the defence, still require strengthening. He argued that Carrick cannot afford to postpone addressing those weaknesses until the next transfer window.

“If you’re manager of Manchester United you know the pressure which comes with the job and the time now you’re not getting much time in the job,” Rooney said.

Discussing Carrick’s comments about being satisfied with his new additions, Rooney added, “I don’t think any manager’s happy.”

“He can’t sit there and go ‘Well, you know what? I’ll wait till next year,’ then I’ll have my defence sorted,” he said.

The former England international also highlighted the growing expectations placed on managers by modern football clubs, noting that coaches are increasingly expected to produce positive results within a short period.

Rooney further expressed concern over the amount of responsibility currently placed on captain Bruno Fernandes, whom he believes needs greater support from his teammates and the club’s recruitment efforts.

“I love Bruno. I think he’s brilliant,” Rooney said, adding that the midfielder could be thinking, “Right, please bring me some help. I’m doing everything I can. Help me.”

Rooney also questioned whether United’s current recruitment has done enough to transform the team into genuine Premier League title contenders.

“There is nothing in there which is saying to me now these players are going to take Man United to the next level,” he stated.

While acknowledging the expectations of Manchester United supporters for Premier League and Champions League success, Rooney said the club must recognise that it is currently some distance from competing consistently at that level.

He referenced Arsenal’s gradual development under Mikel Arteta as an example of a rebuilding project that required several years, but warned that Carrick may not be afforded the same amount of time at Old Trafford.

Carrick will have an opportunity to ease some of the pressure when Manchester United face Azerbaijan club Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday. The fixture will be followed by a major Premier League test against Manchester City in the first leg of the Manchester derby on Sunday.
